Blog 1: Why is scientific research necessary?

In the first blog of this series, we start with a fundamental question: why do we conduct scientific research?

Knowing Rather Than Assuming Many people have ideas about what ME/CFS is or what causes it. You may hear different explanations and opinions, but opinions are not the same as facts. Scientific research aims to establish what is actually true. Researchers follow established methods and clear protocols. They carefully document what they do and how they do it, allowing other researchers to review, verify, and repeat their work. In this way, scientific knowledge is built on evidence rather than personal beliefs or expectations.

Collecting Evidence Science is about gathering evidence. Researchers measure, count, and observe. They use tools such as questionnaires, physical examinations, brain imaging, and analyses of blood and tissue samples. This is particularly important in ME/CFS research, as much remains unknown about what happens in the body of people living with the disease. By collecting evidence, researchers gain a better understanding of the biological processes involved. These may include the immune system, energy metabolism, the gut microbiome, or changes in the brain.

Building Knowledge Step by Step Scientific knowledge is built gradually. Every study contributes a small piece of the puzzle. By comparing and combining findings from different studies, researchers develop an increasingly complete understanding of a disease. Scientific ideas are continually tested, refined, and, when necessary, revised. Science is therefore not only about making new discoveries but also about validating and improving existing knowledge. This is how our understanding of ME/CFS continues to grow.

What This Means for People with ME/CFS Scientific research plays an essential role for people with ME/CFS and those close to them. Only through high-quality research can healthcare professionals gain a better understanding of what is happening in the body. This knowledge supports more accurate diagnosis and the development of treatments that are truly effective. Every study—large or small—contributes to this goal. Scientific progress takes time, but each step brings us closer to a better understanding of ME/CFS and to knowledge that may ultimately improve the quality of life of people living with the disease.
